Taylor Kirwan will be one of 14 defenseman looking to earn a spot on Hockey Canada’s 2017-18 Women’s National U-18 Team this summer.
The Gull Lake product has been invited to the U18 selection camp in Calgary on August 5-13. The Summer Showcase includes 25 development team invites and 42 under-18 invitees.
The 42 U-18 players will be split into two teams for practices, intrasquad games, off-ice dryland training, fitness testing, and classroom sessions. They will also play against Russia’s under-18 team as well.
The invite list is comprised of six goaltenders, 14 defenseman, and 22 forwards. Following the selection camp, 23 will be selected to play for Canada’ National Women’s Under-18 Team in a three-game series against the United States in Lake Placid, NY on August 17-20.
Hockey Canada will continue to evaluate the players with their provincial and club teams during the 2017-18 season to select a team to represent Canada at the 2018 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.
Kirwan has 15 goals, 27 assists, and 48 penalty minutes in 83 regular season games with the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League. The 5’8’’ blueliner also has eight goals and nine assists in 24 career post-season games.
The U-18 team will be coached by Delaney Collins. Kirwan was previously one of 50 U-18 players to take part in the National Women’s Program strength and conditioning camp in Hamilton in May. She has already committed to Lindenwood University for the 2018-19 season.
