The 17U Female Junior SunDogs volleyball team opened their season with a second-place finish at the 16-team 17U/18U ACE tournament in Calgary.
The opening match against Drumheller saw the Sundogs coming out strong, winning 25-5, 25-16. The second and third matches resulted in similar wins over ACE – Hearts Black (25-14, 25-9) and ACE – Spades Red (25-13, 25-14).
After three back-to-back matches the SunDogs had a break before taking on STAVC 18U – St. Albert, which ended in a tight three-set win (25-18, 23-25, 10-8).
With that quarter-final win, the girls went up against the 17U Calgary Lions and won in three sets again (25-19, 23-25, 11-9)
The SunDogs faced a very tall ACE Silver 18U team in the final. The ACES put up big blocks and hard serves, which turned out to be too much for the SunDogs to overcome as they dropped the final 19-25, 16-25 to take home second place.
The 17U Junior SunDogs, coached by Darren Lehmann, Shawn Fraser and Kendra Lehmann, will be back in action next weekend in Regina for the QCVC Elite tournament.
