SWAC basketball and curling action heating up

Most of our senior basketball league games wrapped up last week. Maple Creek boys beat Gull Lake (57-52). Swift Current boys defeated Vanguard (75-20) and Frontier boys lost to Shaunavon (69-61). The Maple Creek girls lost to Swift Current (55-26) and Shaunavon girls won over Herbert (59-39).

There is one makeup game left in the senior basketball league, but it does not affect the playoff standings. The makeup game between Maple Creek boys and Vanguard co-ed will be on Thursday, February 13th. 

The senior league semifinals are set.  On Monday, Feb. 11, the fourth seeded Maple Creek girls will visit the top seeded Shaunavon Silhouettes. On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the third seeded Herbert girls will visit the second seeded SCCHS Junior Ardens. The fourth seeded Gull Lake co-ed team will visit the top seeded SCCHS Junior Colts and the third seeded Shaunavon Shadows will visit the second seeded Frontier Boys. The league final will take place on February 25.

Shaunavon’s Bryden Tremere won the league scoring title with 16 points per game.  

Herbert’s Shyler Chartier followed with 14.1 ppg and Maple Creek’s Logan Resch was third with 13.3 ppg.

Gull Lake’s Ian Mittleholtz averaged 28.8 points lead all boys scorers. Frontier’s Kyle Anderson was second with 23.8 ppg and Shaunavon’s’ Codee Smith was third with 23.1 ppg.         

Waldeck girls and Maple Creek girls have a makeup game in our junior league on February 11. The last games of the regular junior league are on February 13. Swift Current hosts Shaunavon boys and Waldeck girls, Maple Creek boys host Herbert boys and Shaunavon girls host Maple Creek. 

Junior league semifinals will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 (#4 at #1, #3 at #2). The final is slated for Thursday, Feb. 27.

SWAC Senior Curling Districts took place in Leader this past weekend. The top two teams from our district advance to the SHSAA Regional competitions in Rosetown/Outlook on February 28-29.

Regional Qualifying teams are:

1st  – Fox Valley Girls: Rory Schneider, Mikayla Herter, Abbie Hoffart, Talyssa Herter, coach Kalin Deis.

1st – SCCHS mixed: Rachel Schlechter, Cole Wiebe, Kassidy Painchaud, Colby Latimer, coach Jeff Chambers.

2nd – Maple Creek mixed: Luke Jamieson, Ashley Kramer, Jaron Scribner, Kathleen Portz.

1st  – SCCHS boys: Beau Cornelson, Dusty Cherpin, Carson Funk, Zander Rommelaire, coach Jeff Chambers.

2nd – Hazlet boys: Kylon PawlukAnderson, Tyson Anderson, Cole Sletten, Euan Brown.

SWAC Junior curling sectionals took place on Saturday, February 8. The top two teams in each sectional advance to the District Championship on February 28-29. Girls will take place in Consul and Boys/Open will be held in Eastend.
