The Swift Current Broncos got in the win column for the first time since January 26 by earning a 2-0 shutout win over the host Regina Pats on Wednesday night.
Broncos goaltender Isaac Poulter earned his first career shutout by turning aside all 33 shots he faced. The 17-year-old netminder is now 3-20-1-0 on the season, being named the game’s first star and turning in a strong performance to win in goal for the first time since November 24.
Broncos import forward Joona Kiviniemi scored his team leading 16th goal of the season midway through the opening period to stake Swift Current to a 1-0 advantage.
Ethan O’Rourke counted his 11th of the year on a power play with 1:33 left in regulation to round out the scoring.
Regina netminder Max Paddock was named the game’s second star for kicking out 31 of 33 shots in the loss.
The Broncos win ends a frustrating streak where the team compiled a 0-15-2-1 record. Swift Current previously last won a game on January 26 when they earned a 5-4 overtime decision over the host Saskatoon Blades.
Both teams fired 33 shots on goal, with Swift Current going one for four on the power play, and Regina failing to score on three man advantage situations.
The Broncos are now 11-49-4-2 on the season, while Regina has dropped seven straight and falls to 18-45-1-2.
Swift Current returns to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex on Friday for their final home game of the season against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. Friday’s contest is also Fan Appreciation Night, and the team will hand out their end of season player awards.
