Mankota couple wins Lotto Max windfall

Brent and Joan Baron from Mankota won $228,799.70 on the April 21, 2017 Lotto Max draw, but they did not check their ticket until early January to find out they were major prize winners.

The saying ‘good things come to those who wait’ is certainly applicable for a Mankota couple who won a lottery prize nine months after the ticket draw.

Brent and Joan Baron from Mankota won $228,799.70 on the April 21, 2017 Lotto Max draw, but they did not check their ticket until early January to find out they were a major prize winner.

“We usually buy tickets and put them away,” Joan Baron said in the Western Canada Lottery Corporation press release. “We check them now and then when we have our morning coffee.”

The couple checked their tickets, with Joan reading the winning numbers from the computer while Brent checked off the numbers on their tickets. They matched six of seven main numbers plus the bonus on one line – 3, 4, 13, 16, 35, 47, 49 and the bonus, 37.

“Brent thought I was setting him up, playing a joke on him,” Joan said. “He thought I had written the numbers down and then just read them out to make it look like we had a winner.”

The Barons checked their numbers one more time and high-fived each other.
“I had tears in my eyes,” said Joan. “It was surreal.”

The couple purchased their winning ticket at S2M Market Ltd., located at 126 3rd Street in Mankota. They plan to use their winnings to pay bills and renovate their home.
