Val Marie plunges to record setting -43.6

Val Marie set a new low temperature record this morning when the mercury plunged all the way to -43.6 Celsius.

Monday morning’s low temperature eclipsed the previous record of -32.2 Celsius set in 1949. It also ranks as the coldest February 12 in Val Marie since records were first kept in 1939.

Val Marie was the only community to post a new weather record in the -40 or lower range.

Five other Saskatchewan locations set new low temperature records on Monday morning, including: Kindersley -36.4 (old record -34.4 in 1951); Assiniboia -33.6 (old record -28.9 in 1975); Coronach -36.4 (old record -29.0 in 2000), Rockglen -33.8 (old record -26.9 in 1995); and Weyburn -36.5 (old record -31.1 in 1975).
