The Swift Current 57’s Baseball Club have announced a partnership with the Vic-tory Boxing Club to honor a long time supporter of both clubs by combining efforts to host the Earl Monkman Memorial Boxing Card later this month at Mitchell Field.
The event, presented by Redhead Equipment, is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 23 at 6 p.m. under the lights at Mitchell Field. This will be the first ever amateur boxing event held outdoors in Saskatchewan and the event has the both parties really excited.
“We are excited to announce that V-BC will be teaming up with the 57s Baseball Club at Mitchell Field for some Olympic-Style Boxing”, stated Earl’s son and V-BC director, Jerry Monkman. “Dad spent a lot of evenings at Mitchell Field, and we hope all of Swift Current and the surrounding area will come out and support this unique outdoor event.”
Riding high on the teams recent Western Major Baseball League championship, the 57’s Board of Directors felt that this was a good opportunity to share some of their volunteer resources to assist V-BC in honoring Earl Monkman and his legacy as a long time supporter and volunteer of both clubs.
“2017 was a season to remember with great successes both on and off the field culminating with our second straight Western Major Baseball Legaue championship,” stated 57’s President, Mike Mutlow.
“Earl (Monkman) was an avid supporter of the ball club and in honour of his legacy as a committed volunteer; we were excited to partner with the Boxing Club to host this great event at Mitchell Field in the City of Swift Current.”
The evening will begin with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m., followed by a full card of both exhibition and sanctioned amateur bouts.
