An investigation is underway to determine the cause of a fatal plane crash just east of the Swift Current Airport on Thursday night.
The Swift Current Rural RCMP confirmed that the two occupants of the plane were pronounced deceased at the scene.
A small, single engine plane took off from the Swift Current Airport at 7:04 p.m., and crashed approximately one kilometre from the runway. The plane had arrived at the Airport around 6:23 p.m. Swift Current’s Airport is a common stop for pilots as a refuelling location because there are few other airports nearby that provide refuelling services.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is sending a team of investigators to gather information and assess the incident.
“Currently, a Transportation Safety Board investigation team is en route to the crash site, which has been secured and is being protected by the RCMP. The cause of the incident will be determined through the Transportation Safety Board’s investigation. The City would like to express our sincere condolences to the family/families of the individuals who were killed in the crash. We will have no further comment on this incident,” explained Michael Boutilier, Communications and Stakeholder Relations Coordinator for the City of Swift Current.
Emergency and fire crews were dispatched to the scene minutes after the crash.
No further details are available at this time.
The incident tis currently being investigated by the RCMP and investigators from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.
