Metke wins Canada Games wrestling silver medal

Alexandria Templeton Metke from Cadillac is bringing home a silver medal from the 2022 Canada Summer Games after placing second in the female up to 44 kilogram weight class.

Metke dropped a pinfall decision against Ontario’s Laila Seed-Desai in the gold medal bout on Thursday afternoon. She was trailing by a 4-0 count before the pinball at the 37 second mark of the opening round.

The Swift Current Titans Club wrestler had advanced to the gold medal final by out-pointing Alberta’s Natasha Ekundayo 6-2 during a Thursday morning semifinal bout.

Metke’s Canada Games silver medal is an upgrade from the bronze medal she won in the under 19 female 46 kilogram weight class at the 2022 Canadian Wrestling Championships earlier this year.

Metke, along with her Team Saskatchewan wrestling teammates, earned a fourth place finish in the Female Team Wrestling competition which was held on August 9 to 11th.

Metke did not have an opponent in the opening round against Newfoundland and Labrador on August 9, but she made the best of her Games debut by pinning New Brunswick’s Eleanor Caufield in 28 seconds during in an early afternoon bout. On August 10 she did not have an opponent in the team competition against Quebec during the morning, but was defeated 10-1 by Mia Bahi from Team British Columbia in the afternoon.

Team Saskatchewan faced Team Alberta for the team bronze medal but dropped a 38-9 decision while placing fourth overall. In her bout Metke dropped a 9-2 match against Natasha Ekundayo, but she avenged that defeat by scoring a win over Ekundayo in the individual medal competition.
