The Red Deer Rebels scored three unanswered third period goals to skate away with a 5-2 win over the host Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday night at the Innovation Credit Union iPlex.
Tuesday’s physical contest featured a combined 80 penalty minutes and 13 power play chances during the third head to head contest between the Central Division rivals.
Red Deer’s Arshdeep Bains scored his 19th of the year to collect the game winning goal 2:14 into the third period shortly after a Broncos power play. The Rebels added insurance goals on the power play to put the game away, with Ben King collecting his 29th goal of the season at the 5:24 mark of the period, and Liam Keller notching his 16th of the year in the final minute of play. Red Deer also had first period goals from Jayden Grubbe and Jace Isley.
Swift Current import forward Alexei Shanaurin scored his first WHL goal on the power play 5:27 into the game to give the Broncos their only lead of the game. Josh Davies notched his 11th of the campaign at 16:22 of the middle period to tie the game at 2-2 after two periods.
Red Deer goaltender Chase Coward was named the game’s first star by stopping 27 of 29 shots. The Swift Current product is now 10-7-0-1 on the season.
Broncos netminder Reid Dyck turned aside 22 of 27 shots while falling to 2-8-1-0 on the year.
Swift Current was one for seven on the power play, while Red Deer went two for six with the man advantage.
With the win Red Deer improved to 25-12-2-1, while Swift Current dropped to 14-19-4-1. The Rebels have won all three season match ups between the teams. Swift Current travels to Red Deer on Friday to renew their rivalry in the fourth of sixth meetings between the clubs.
