Swift Current rink places second at Tankard

The Steve Laycock rink, curling out of Swift Current, advanced all the way to the championship game at the 2025 SaskTel Tankard Mens Championship in Kindersley.

Featuring Swift Current’s Chris Haichert and Cabri’s Shaun Meachem, the Laycock foursome lost the final 8-5 to Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter on Sunday evening. Kleiter scored three points in the third end and three more in the fifth to take control of the game.

They had opened the event with a 10-2 win over Martensville’s Logan Ede and a 10-4 win over Saskatoon’s Dustin Kalthoff on Tuesday. They opened day two with a 9-5 win over Langenberg’s Charley Thomas and added a 9-6 win over Saskatoon’s Jason Jacobson.

Thursday, Laycock scored a point in the extra end to defeat Kleiter 7-6 to move to 5-0. The Swift Current rink lost its only round robin game on Thursday afternoon by a 9-8 score to Martensville’s Dylan Derksen.

Friday, they defeated Regina’s Kelly Knapp 6-5 to move to 6-1.

Saturday, the Swift Current rink wrapped up top spot in the round robin with an 8-4 win over Saskatoon’s Bradley Moser

They edged second-place Kalthoff 9-8 in the 1v2 page playoff on Saturday to earn a spot in the final. Laycock trailed 4-1 after four ends before scoring three in the fifth and stealing three in the sixth end to lead 7-4. Kalthoff scored two points in the seventh and stole a single in the eighth to tie the game. Laycock scored two in the ninth and held Kalthoff to a single in the final end to close out the win.
