The incredible rookie season of Dylan Mortensen concluded Thursday when he was named the U Sports Men’s Volleyball Rookie of the Year.
The Swift Current product played in all 24 matches for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies this season after red shirting the previous season. The 6’6’’ outside hitter led the Huskies with 299 kills, which was sixth amongst all players in the Canada West Conference.
He added 116 digs, 24 service aces, and 28.5 blocks as the Huskies just missed the playoffs with a 10-14 record. He had previously been named to the Canada West All-Rookie Team and then was named the Canada West Rookie of the Year.
“Dylan is a very worthy recipient of the national Rookie of the Year award,” noted Huskies head coach Brian Gavlas in the awards announcement. “He had an outstanding season leading our team and his offensive numbers in the Canada West conference speak for themselves. This was a very strong year of rookie performances in Canada West and being named one of the best is a testament to the special season he had. From a coach’s perspective, it is not surprising. He is a driven, goal-orientated student-athlete and his ceiling is limitless.”
