Luke Mitchell helped Saskatchewan to a fourth-place finish at the 15U Boys Ray Carter Cup Championship on August 20-23 in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. Saskatchewan finished with three wins and four losses at the 10-team event.
Saskatchewan opened the tournament with a 10-1 loss to Quebec on Thursday morning. Quebec scored in each of the first six innings, including three runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Mitchell got the start at first base and finished zero-for-two at the plate.
Friday, Saskatchewan bounced back with a 5-2 win over British Columbia. Mitchell had a single in the first inning when Saskatchewan scored two runs for a lead that they would never relinquish.
They added a 6-1 win over Alberta later on Friday when they scored the opening six runs of the game. Mitchell had a stolen base in the fourth inning for Saskatchewan.
Saturday, Saskatchewan lost 3-1 to Ontario. Saskatchewan recovered with a 1-0 win over New Brunswick later that day. Mitchell had his best game at the plate with a double, a walk, and a stolen base. Saskatchewan dropped the semi-final 4-0 to Quebec when they were held to two hits on Saturday evening.
They lost the bronze medal game 2-0 to Nova Scotia when they were out-hit 5-3 in a pitcher’s duel.
Ontario defeated Quebec 9-4 in the gold medal game on Sunday.
