The Swift Current 57’s kept their season alive with a 6-5 comeback win over the host Weyburn Beavers. The 57’s trailed early but came back to get their first win in three attempts in the best-of-five Western Major Baseball League Eastern Division championship series.
The Beavers got out to a 3-0 lead before Blake Adams took a bases loaded walk to score Cole Thibodeau in the top of the third inning. The Beavers got the run right back in the bottom of the inning though.
The 57’s took the lead with a four-run sixth inning. It was Thibodeau’s turn to take a bases loaded walk to plate Thomas DeBonville. Brett Esau scored on a fielder’s choice when Riley Campbell reached first. Matt Bondarchuk added an infield single to score Campbell and John Baiada.
Baiada singled home Nick Canas in the seventh inning for a 6-4 lead, but Evan Weidner homered for the Beavers in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half.
Starter Matt Michalski lasted only two innings, allowing nine hits, one walk, and four runs, three that were earned.
Sean Chandler gave the 57’s a chance to win with four hitless innings, striking out five without allowing a walk. Jagger Harjo added two scoreless innings as the 57’s bullpen continued a strong series.
Keil Krumwiede got the save, including a fly ball to end the game with the tying run on third base.
Game four will be played Thursday in Weyburn. Game five, if necessary, will be Friday back in Swift Current.
