SHSAA SPORTSMANSHIP BANNER

The Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association made a couple of very prestigious awards presentations this week.

The SHSAA Sportsmanship banner is awarded to one team, in each classification, who best displayed the values of sportsmanship at provincial championships. SWAC had two teams whose athletes, coaches and fans’ sportsmanship stood out amongst the rest of the teams in attendance. Both teams received high praise for their sportsmanship from officials, organizers, SHSAA board of director members and volunteers at their provincial championship. Congratulations to both the Maple Creek girls volleyball team and the Fox Valley girls volleyball team. Both of these programs showed that competitiveness and sportsmanship can be displayed hand in hand.

The 3A Maple Creek girls volleyball team was led by coaches Corrie Scott, Curtise Clement, Emmy Robertson, and Charity Noval. Team members were Sophia Uribe, Shawna Wagner, Nevaeh Francis, Payton Beauchamp, Yza Fundal, Kyra Whitrow, Amaya Hayter, Makenna Robertson, Emelie Baynton, Chandee Chabot, Ceejay Davis, Rylie Huck, Shelby Schmaltz, Hailey Bauer, Maizey Cronkite, Fiona Octa, Olivia Moncreiff, and Netina Campbell.

SWAC JUNIOR BASKETBALL

Junior basketball is being organized a little differently this year. There will be some home/home exhibition games scheduled for teams wanting that option. Then, SWAC will hold separate tournament/playoff brackets to determine the junior girls and boys basketball champions.

In SWAC junior exhibition league play, things will resume on January 8 with Maple Creek traveling to Shaunavon.

Teams taking part in an end of season girls district playoff are Shaunavon girls, Maple Creek girls and Leader girls. The three teams will meet on a Saturday to play a round robin tournament on February 7 to decide the Junior Girls SWAC title.

The boys have an elimination bracket format for the SWAC championship. There will be an A side and B side playoff. Eight junior boy teams have registered: Shaunavon, Maple Creek, Frontier, Vanguard, Herbert, Leader, Fairview and Ecole Centennial. They will play on Thursdays over three weeks in February.
