SHSAA BOYS PROVINCIAL VOLLEYBALL

The last weekend of the SHSAA volleyball championships took place on Nov. 21-22.  Provincial tournaments are two seeded pools of five, then crossover quarter-finals, semi-finals and medal matches. Teams need to be in the top four of their pool to advance into playoffs.

The 1A Frontier Raiders were at the SHSAA provincial tournament in Rouleau. Their first day started with losses to Rouleau (25-14, 25-17) and Medstead (25-17, 25-22).  Those two teams were the eventual gold and silver medalists. The Raiders turned things around on Saturday with wins over Kenaston (25-21, 25-14) and Sturgis (23-25, 25-20, 15-9) and this left them third in their pool. They crossed over to play a quarter-final match against LeRoy (eventual bronze medalist). This was a very well played, competitive match, but Frontier lost in the end (25-18, 25-23) and they were eliminated.  Holding their own against the three medalists from this provincial championship shows how competitive the Raiders were.

2A Cabri and Consul were in Outlook at a provincial tournament hosted by LCBI.  Consul had a tougher time in their pool, not winning a match, but they were very close in three of their four round robin games. Friday started with losses to Harvest City (25-23, 25-20). Harvest City was the #2 ranked team in the province going into the championship. The Cougars then lost to hometown LCBI (25-14, 25-13). On Saturday, Consul fought hard for a win that could put them into the playoffs. They lost to Lashburn (25-14, 25-21) and then lost a very close 2-1 match to Englefeld in their last chance to continue in the tournament (24-26, 25-23, 10-15). That loss ended the Consul team’s season.

2A Cabri was in a strong pool with all the eventual medalists. During pool play on Friday, they lost to silver placing Saskatoon Christian School (25-16, 25-18) and future gold medalists Wilkie (25-19, 25-17). Saturday started out with a 2-1 loss to bronze winning Waldheim (25-15, 25-20). Cabri rebounded with an exciting 2-1 match win over Langenburg (18-25, 25-22, 15-9). Cabri finished fourth in their pool and had the unenviable task of taking on #1 from the other pool, Regina Harvest City, in the quarter-final. This match was almost the upset of the weekend, Cabri took Harvest City to a third set. The Cougars narrowly lost that match that ended their season (16-25, 25-21, 13-15), and Harvest City went on to eventually play in the bronze medal match. Cabri definitely proved that they could compete with the top four teams in the province.
