The Swift Current Comp. Colts senior boys volleyball team celebrated their 50th home tournament with an unbeaten run through the 13-team event to capture gold.
“It was good. We played really well,” said grade 11 left side Cade Schindel. “We executed a lot of free ball stuff that we’ve been working on all year. Our middles blocked well through the whole weekend, a lot of touches, and passed well.”
The Colts capped the unbeaten run with a thrilling win over Prince Albert St. Mary (25-22, 28-26) in the championship match. They had defeated Regina Winston Knoll in the semi-final (25-19, 25-20)
The Colts met little resistance in the round robin as they rattled off wins over Fox Valley (25-8, 25-16), Estevan (25-9, 25-10), Winston Knoll (25-19, 25-14), Yorkton Regional (25-17, 25-9), Oxbow (25-10, 25-17), and Prince Albert Carlton (25-17, 25-21).
The win marked the first time the Colts have won their home tournament since 2016 and 18th title overall in 50 attempts.
“It was good, especially since it’s the 50th anniversary for this tournament and because all the parents got to come watch,” said Schindel.
The Colts opened the season with a third-place finish and then won gold last weekend in Meadow Lake.
“Everyone has just been growing a whole bunch. A lot of skills have been getting developed. We’re learning our setting, hitting good, blocking good,” said Schindel.
Schindel said the main goal is to win provincials on Nov. 19-20 in Saskatoon.
“We just have to play good like how we’ve been playing lately. Good hitting, good passing, good blocking, and smart plays.”
The Colts are off to Regina next weekend for a tournament.
