The Swift Current Broncos opened the 2026-27 Western Hockey League regular season with a fight-filled 5-2 win over the visiting Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday.
Newcomer Cal Conway led the Broncos to the win with 36 saves. Steele Bass made 20 saves for the Raiders.
The Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Parker Rondeau opened the season scoring with a shorthanded goal off a pass from Trae Wilke 9:22 into regulation. Wilke doubled the lead at the 15:47 mark on the power play when he found a lose puck in the crease and deposited it into the open net. The Raiders cut the lead in half late in the period with a power play goal from Ben Harvey.
The second period was scoreless, but the fans were entertained by a line brawl that resulted in 124 penalty minutes between the two teams.
The Broncos restored the two-goal lead 4:28 into the third period when defenseman Jace McFaul jumped into the rush for goal right after a solid penalty kill effort from the Broncos. Owen Corkish cut into the lead again for the Raiders with another power play goal midway through the period. Import Oliver Torkii added an insurance goal for the Broncos, his first in the WHL. Brendan Rudolph sealed the win with an empty net goal, which was challenged unsuccessfully for offside by the Raiders.
The Broncos will return to action on Friday when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors
