The Swift Current 57’s dropped their Western Canadian Baseball League season opener 11-1 to the host Regina Red Sox on Thursday.
The game was tied 0-0 after five innings, before the host Red Sox scored two runs in the sixth inning, followed by an eight-run seventh inning.
The 57’s scored their only run in the ninth inning when veteran Jose Ayala singled home Silas Hilton.
Veteran Adam Korte took the loss as he allowed nine hits, two walks, and two earned runs, while striking out two over 5.2 innings.
Holden Hungerford earned the win for Regina with six scoreless innings while striking out four, allowing only two hits and one walk.
Third baseman Riley Bender led the Sox with four hits and one RBI as they totaled 18 hits and seven walks. Rafael Jackson tormented the 57’s with two singles, three walks, three stolen bases, two runs scored, and two RBIs.
The 57’s will host their home opener on Friday against the Medicine Hat Mavericks at 7:05 p.m. at Mitchell Field.
