The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats dropped down the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League standings when they earned only two of six points in a weekend home stand against the Melville Prairie Fire.
Saturday, the Wildcats allowed the game’s opening five goals in a 5-2 loss to the Prairie Fire during the Hockey Day in Canada festivities at the iplex as their eight-game winning streak came to a sudden halt.
The Fire received two goals from Starla Mann and singles from Megan Hayhurst, Allison Hayhurst, and Heather Fiske over the opening 42:20 to open an insurmountable lead.
The Wildcats replied with goals from Sara Kendall and Kenedee Klevgaard. Maddy McCleary, Brynne Doerksen, Crystal Wale, and Layne Hryhoriw added assists.
Amaya Giraudier took the loss after allowing five goals on 20 shots over 42:20. Harper Davey stopped all five shots she faced in relief.
Cheyenne Jamieson picked up the win with 28 saves on 30 shots.
Sunday’s game was delayed by a power outage, but the Wildcats eventually picked up a pair of points in a 2-1 overtime win.
Taylor Lind scored in overtime to salvage the weekend with an assist from Baylee Kirwan. Tobi Fontaine scored the other goal in the second period to tie the game with assists from Klevgaard and Doerksen.
Jordyn Bear had scored a shorthanded goal in the first period to give the Prairie Fire the lead. Jamieson made 36 saves for the Prairie Fire. Giraudier earned the win with 28 saves for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats (13-10-2-1) are now three points back of the Prince Albert Bears (13-8-3-2) for third in the SFMAAAHL.
The Wildcats will conclude the regular season this weekend with two games against the last place Weyburn Wings (1-24-0-1). The first game will be Saturday at 7:45 p.m., followed by Sunday’s meeting at 12:45 p.m. at Fairview West Arena.
The Bears will host the second-place Regina Rebels for games on Friday and Saturday.
