Wildcats busy in tournament action

The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats took part in the largest Female Midget AAA Hockey tournament in Western Canada over the weekend. They finished with three wins and two losses over four days at the 16-team Mandi Schwartz Memorial Tournament in Wilcox.

The Wildcats dropped their opening game 5-3 to the Regina Rebels on Thursday. Baylee Kirwan assisted on all three goals, while Sara Kendall added a goal and an assist. Carissa Hogan and Taylor Lind also scored, while Kamryn Johnson added a single helper. Harper Davey made 17 saves in goal.

Friday morning, the Wildcats trailed 3-1 in the third period but came back to defeat the Calgary Fire 5-4. Lind led the Wildcats with a goal and three assists, Kirwan scored twice, Kendall notched a goal and an assist, and Ryleigh White added two assists.

Layne Hryhoriw also scored, while Brooklyn Rublee, Maddy McCleary, and Crystal Wale added assists. Amaya Giraudier earned the win in goal.

The Wildcats followed up with a 6-0 win over the Vancouver Island Seals when they fired 47 shots and allowed only eight against as Davey earned the shutout.

The Wildcats took on Red Deer on Saturday and won 4-2. Lind scored twice, while Rublee and Brynne Doerksen also found the back of the net. Ashlee Wolfe, Wale, Kendall, Madison Garrett, Lind, White, and Kenedee Klevgaard all added assists. Giraudier earned the win in goal.

The Wildcats concluded the tournament on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to the Lloydminster Steelers despite holding a 31-18 advantage on the shot clock.

The Wildcats (5-6-0-1) will return to Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League action this weekend when they host the Prince Albert Bears (6-6-1-1) on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. at Fairview West Arena.
