Environment Canada confirms two tornadoes in Southwest Saskatchewan on Monday

Weather summary for Saskatchewan issued by Environment Canada at 8:59 p.m. CST Monday 9 July 2018.

Severe thunderstorms were observed in southern Saskatchewan in the late afternoon and evening of July 9, 2018. A couple of tornadoes were reported with these storms. The following is a summary of severe weather reported to the Prairie and Arctic Storm Prediction Centre (PASPC) as of 8 pm CST.

1. Meteorologists at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) have confirmed a tornado that occurred near Cantuar, SK around 3:20 P.M. CST ON July 9, 2018.

This was considered a landspout tornado that was generated by rotation under a rapidly growing thunderstorm. Landspout tornadoes do not usually cause significant damage but can still be dangerous as they can topple trees, damage roofs, or toss debris a short distance.

ECCC has received no reports of damage, therefore, this tornado will be given a preliminary rating of EF-0.

2. Meteorologists at ECCC have confirmed a brief tornado that occurred near Chaplin, SK around 4:10 P.M. CST on July 9, 2018.

ECCC has received no reports of damage, therefore, this tornado will be given a preliminary rating of EF-0.

3. The PASPC received reports of a possible tornado near Coronach, SK around 5:30 P.M. CST. At this time, there is insufficient evidence to confirm that a tornado has touched down; however, PASPC meteorologists continue to investigate and will update if more information becomes available.
