Former 57 drafted in MLB Draft

Former Swift Current 57’s pitcher Sean Chandler was selected in the Major League Baseball Draft today. The 6’5’’ right-handed pitcher was taken in the sixth round, 179th overall, by the Texas Rangers.

The Bellevue, NE product was a part of the 2017 57’s team that won the Western Major Baseball League championship.

He appeared in 16 games as a reliever and finished with a 4-0 record. Chandler pitched in 13 regular season games with a 1.05 earned run average with 22 strikeouts and only seven hits allowed over 17 innings. He was even more dominant during two post-season appearances when he did not allow an earned run over 8.2 innings while striking out 13 and only walking two with a 2-0 record.

Chandler had a spectacular season with the Iowa Western Community College Reivers with an 11-0 record and a 1.34 ERA. The Sophomore pitcher struck out 123 batters over 74 innings for an average of 14.96 strikeouts per nine innings and only walked 20 batters. He held opposition batters to a .129 batting average this season.

Chandler was previously drafted in the 32nd round by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2015, but opted to go to school instead.
