Leader Saints win two medals at badminton provincials

The SHSAA provincial badminton championships were held in Wilkie on May 12. The Leader badminton team came home with a gold medal, bronze medal and 4th place finish. Southwest badminton players had a successful competition at SHSAA provincials and came home with a gold and a bronze medal.

Congratulations to the Leader duo of Payton Stimson and Kyla Tumbach as they won the gold medal in girls doubles! The provincial format has eight teams in each category placed into two pools of four. After the round robin, the top two in each pool advance to the playoff round. The grade 12 girls placed first in pool A with a record of 3-0. They had wins over Oxbow (2-0), Carrot River #1 (2-1) and Wilkie (2-0).

The other Leader team, composed of Megan Tumbach and Kerstyn Wenzel, were in Pool B. The grade 10 team placed second with a record of 2-1. They had wins over Regina Riffel (2-1) and North Battleford John Paul II (2-1). They lost to Carrot River #2 (0-2). This set up an all Leader semi final.

Payton and Kyla came out on top 2-0 and advanced to the gold medal match. They defeated Carrot River #2 (2-1) to win the championship.

Megan and Kerstyn battled in the bronze match where they defeated Wilkie (2-1) to take home the medal. Congrats to the girls and their coach Houston Doig!

In boys doubles, the Leader team of Carson Leach and Jordan Mastel were fourth overall. The boys finished first in Pool A with a record of 3-0. They had victories over Regina O’Neill (2-0), Humboldt (2-0) and North Battleford John Paul II (2-1). The boys lost in the semi to Saskatoon Bethlehem (1-2) then dropped to the bronze match where they lost to Humboldt (1-2). Strong showing by Carson and Jordan.

In boys singles, SWAC was represented by two competitors. Bobby Hudec (Fox Valley) had a record of 1-2 in Pool A. He beat Englefeld (2-0) but lost to Regina Luther (0-2) and Saskatoon Evan Hardy (0-2). He did not advance to the playoff round.

The other competitor was Dallyn Jamieson from Cabri. Dallyn had a record of 0-3 in Pool B. He lost to Regina O’Neill (0-2), Porcupine Plain (0-2) and Saskatoon Walter Murray (0-2). He did not advance to the playoff round.

In mixed doubles, Matthew Ganert and Kenna Anton had a record of 0-3 in Pool A and did not advance to the playoff round. They lost to Regina O’Neill (0-2), Engelfeld (0-2) and North Battleford Comp. (1-2).

The last sport on the school calendar is track and field. Meets hosted by SWAC will be as follows:

Blue Section Meet (former Rolling Hills meet) @ Swift Current on Tuesday, May 15. Schools involved include Gull Lake, Stewart Valley, Swift Current Comp, Irwin, Ecole Centennial, All Saints, Waldeck, Wymark, Herbert, Hodgeville, Ponteix and Vanguard. Start time 9:30 a.m. Grades 6-12 will be taking part.

White Section Meet (former Cypress Hills & Whitemud section meets) @ Swift Current on Wednesday, May 16. Schools involved include Maple Creek, Fox Valley, Leader, Burstall, Cabri, Hazlet, Success, Consul, Eastend, Frontier, Shaunavon and Val Marie. Start time 10 a.m. Students in grades 6-12 will be taking part.

The top four from the Blue Section meet and the White section meet will participate at the District Championships, which will be at Swift Current on Wednesday, May 23. Start time 9:30 a.m. Students in grades 6-12 will be taking part.
