The Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats missed an opportunity to make up ground in the Saskatchewan Female Midget AAA Hockey League standings in a 4-3 loss to the host Notre Dame Hounds on Wednesday.
Special teams were the difference as the Hounds scored twice on eight man-advantages, while the Wildcats were held without a goal on two power play opportunities.
The Wildcats spent much of the first period shorthanded and trailed 3-2. Taylor Lind scored to tie the game 1-1 and Baylee Kirwan scored while shorthanded to cut the deficit to 3-2. Kirwan added a second shorthanded goal in the second period to tie the game 3-3.
Alicia Fournier scored the only goal of the third period to clinch the win for the Hounds.
Toni Theaker picked up the only assist for the Wildcats. Amaya Giraudier fell to 6–5-0 despite making 35 saves on 39 shots.
Lind leads the league with 25 goals in 21 games, but was assessed a game misconduct for a boarding major in the second period.
The Wildcats dropped to 9–8-1-3, six points back of the Hounds (10-5-4-0) for fourth in the SFMAAAHL.
The Wildcats are on the road this weekend to visit the sixth-place Melville Prairie Fire (6-14-1-1).
