Harvest nearly half done across the Southwest

The Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report for the period of August 22 to 28 shows the Southwest continues to experience low cropland topsoil moisture conditions.

With 49 per cent of the crop now in the bin, Southwest producers continue to make quick work of the 2017 harvest.

The Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report for the period of August 22 to 28 highlights that warm and dry weather allowed area farmers to complete another 19 per cent of harvest operations, up from 30 per cent the previous reporting period. There is also an additional 12 per cent of fields that are swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Progress this year is well ahead of the five-year average of 31 per cent.

Weather conditions continue to have a negative impact on crop quality, as the majority of crop damage this past week occurred as a result of a lack of moisture, strong winds, and insects.

Cropland topsoil moisture conditions in the Southwest are rated as 13 per cent adequate, 38 per cent short and 49 per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent adequate, 27 per cent short and 70 per cent very short.

Province wide, producers have harvested 26 per cent of the crop, which is also well ahead of the five-year average of 16 per cent completed. In addition, 24 per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The harvest is most advanced here in the Southwest at 49 per cent, followed by the Southeast at 37 per cent and 23 per cent in the West Central region. East Central area producers are 14 per cent completed, while the Northeast is four per cent done and the Northwest has five per cent of the crop in the bin.
