Swiss rink wins Western Showdown

The Swiss rink of Xenia Schwaller won all six games to claim the RBC Dominion Securities Western Showdown in Swift Current this week.

Schwaller defeated Regina’s Michelle Englot 7-6 in an extra end in the championship game on Sunday evening. Schwaller tied the game with two points in the eighth end and then stole a point in the extra end.

The Schwaller rink won all three games in the qualifying round beginning with a 7-2 win over Edmonton’s Serena Gray-Withers on Thursday. They added a 7-1 win over Ottawa’s Danielle Inglis and then qualified for the championship event with a 7-2 win over Michigan’s Delaney Strous.

The Zurich based rink opened the playoffs with a 7-3 quarter-final win over Victoria’s Kayla MacMillan and then added a 4-3 semi-final over Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa.

Englot had qualified through the C event and then defeated Calgary’s Kayla Skrlik 8-5 in the quarter-final and Strous 7-6 in the semi-final.

The men’s quarter-finals will begin on Monday at 9 a.m. with Brad Gushue, Mike McEwen, Kevin Koe, and Brad Jacobs all in action. The final is slated for 4 p.m.
