Swift Current KidSport board members resign amid changes

SUBMITTED

The Swift Current KidSport committee would like to thank the residents and businesses of Swift Current and area for the incredible support over the last 29 years.

Founding member and Treasurer, Craig Menzies, states, “We have worked hard to reduce the financial barriers for children to participate in sports so “All Kids Can Play”. Every effort has been made to assist families that have financial challenges with registration, equipment and transportation over the years to derive the many benefits sport participation has to offer. Our local board feels we have been excellent stewards of the funds we have received and have followed the guidelines given to us.”

Swift Current KidSport has supported 3,795 kids and spent $725,500 all thanks to the support we have received from the community.

Menzies says, “In particular, we would like to thank Tim Horton’s Smile Cookie Campaign and Sports Trader for their amazing support throughout the years.”

Local Chairperson Jenna Reimer-Jones remarked, “Unfortunately the Provincial KidSport Board has recently made some very significant operational changes which our local board does not agree with. The changes strictly enforce what had been guidelines in the past, to very narrow income requirements, age restrictions and application deadlines, which we feel establish numerous barriers to sport participation that we have worked hard to eliminate. As well, any discretion or local input is no longer being accepted. The Swift Current KidSport board were saddened and dismayed by these changes and have all resigned. These changes were made without any consultation with our local board. “

Moving forward, all KidSport applications from Swift Current need to be submitted online to http://www.kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan or sent to KidSport Saskatchewan 1870 Lorne St Regina SK S4P 2L7 where they will be evaluated.

We would also like to thank all past and present board members of Swift Current KidSport. It has been very much appreciated and utilized by the kids. Again thank you for all the support.
