Southwest takes five events at CCA Finals

Southwest competitors won five events at the CCA Finals in Saskatoon.

Leader’s Grady Young covered three bulls to win Bull Riding with 150 points at the Finals. Young topped round one with an 80.5-point ride on Thursday. He was second in round three with 85 points and then won round four with 83 points to close out the title.

Consul’s Zane Tully was fourth in Bull Riding with 65 points. He was second in round two with 80.5 points. He tied for second in round four with 81 points.

Maple Creek’s James Perrin won Saddle Bronc at the Finals with 130 points. Perrin was second on opening night with a 79.5-point ride. He won round two with 81 points. Perrin was fourth in round three with 74 points and then closed out the title in round four in fourth spot with 75 points.

Maple Creek’s Cody Lane finished in third spot in Saddle Bronc with 80 points. He was second in round two with 77 points and won round four with 78 points.

Mankota’s Kiera Williamson won the Junior Girls Barrel Racing event, doubling the next closest cowgirl with 180 points. Williamson won the opening round in 13.74 seconds. She was second in rounds two and three in 13.65 seconds and 13.48 seconds. Williamson closed out the Finals with another win in 13.30 seconds.

Maple Creek’s Blake Link also won Bareback with 180 points. Link won the opening round on Thursday with a 79.5-point ride. He was second in round two with 73.5 points. Link won round three with 81 points and was second again in round four with 74.5 points.

Waldeck’s Tee McLeod and Brady Chappel (Moose Jaw) won Team Roping with 140 points after winning the final three rounds. They posted times of 4.3 seconds, 3.6 seconds, and 3.9 seconds to finish 50 points clear of the competition.

Waldeck’s Tuftin McLeod and Tyce McLeod followed in second with 90 points. They were third in round one in 9.4 seconds. They were also second in round three in 4.6 seconds.

Hazenmore’s Ben Switzer and Colter Dunn (Ogema) finished fourth with 60 points. Switzer and Dunn were fourth in round one in 12.7 seconds. They were also third in round two in 5.6 seconds.

Vincent Traynor (Delisle) and Waldeck’s Scott McLeod were sixth with 30 championship points. They were third in round three in 5.1 seconds and fourth in round four in 7.3 seconds.

Scott McLeod was also named the CCA Cowboy of the Year.

Shamrock’s Kevin Turner and Kent Drake (Moose Jaw) placed eighth with 10 points. They were fourth in round three in 5.2 seconds.

Eastend’s Joe Vansandt finished second in Junior Steer Riding with 110 points, only 10 points back of the event champion. Vansandt was second in the first round with 70.5 points. He was second again on day two with 73.5 points and then won round three with 72 points.

Swift Current’s Madison Kovar tied for fourth in Ladies Breakaway Roping with 50 points. She was third in the third round in 5.0 seconds and improved to second in the final round in 7.6 seconds.

Maple Creek’s Adam Gilchrist represented the Southwest in Steer Wrestling. He tied for fourth in round two in 5.3 seconds. He also placed fourth in the final round in 4.8 seconds.

Mankota’s Shawn Williamson placed seventh in Tie Down Roping at the Finals. He was tied for third in round two in 9.7 seconds. Val Marie’s Colt Kornfeld tied for second in round one in 9.5 seconds and placed ninth in Tie Down Roping.

Mankota’s April Williamson and Waldeck’s Mallory McLeod both qualified for the Finals in Ladies Barrel Racing but were unable to earn any championship points.

McLeod posted times of 18.95 seconds, 13.72 seconds, 13.62 seconds, and 13.65 seconds. Williamson clocked in at 13.73 seconds. 19.12 seconds, 13.53 seconds, and 13.75 seconds.
