Locals make playoffs at S3 Group Stadium Series event

Three rinks featuring Southwest curlers made playoff appearances at the S3 Group Curling Stadium Series event from Oct. 13-15 at the Swift Current Curling Club.

Swift Current’s Teejay Haichert filled in on Michelle Englot’s rink that placed second.  They won their first four games before losing 4-2 to Jana Tisdale in the final.

The Englot rink, with Haichert curling second, defeated Saskatoon’s Sherry Just 6-5, Regina’s Mandy Selzer 8-2, Robyn Silvernagle 8-6, and Saskatoon’s Jessica Mitchell 5-3.

The Robyn Silvernagle rink, featuring Swift Current’s Kelly Schafer, made a playoff appearance as they finished with two wins and two losses.

They opened the weekend with a 9-1 win over Regina’s Jana Tisdale. They lost the next game 8-6 to Englot. Silvernagle rebounded with an 11-4 win over Moose Jaw’s Sherrilee Orsted. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals with a 6-3 loss to Tisdale.

The Steve Laycock rink, featuring Swift Current’s Chris Haichert and Cabri’s Shaun Meachem, finished with three wins and two losses as they advanced to the semi-final.

They dropped the opening game 9-5 to Regina’s Josh Bryden on Friday.

They defeated Saskatoon’s Daymond Bernath 8-2 and then added a 6-2 win over Rosetown’s Jesse St. John. Laycock added a 5-1 win over Saskatoon’s Matthew Drewitz.

They were eliminated with a 7-4 loss to Bryden in the semi-final.

Bryden defeated Regina’s Kelly Knapp 7-6 in the final.
