The Swift Current U15 Sonic won four straight games to claim the title at the Unity U15 Tournament.
The Sonic took one on the chin to start the tournament on Friday night as they faced the Twin City Angels (Warman/Martensville). The Angels defeated the Sonic 17-1 in four innings to start the tournament. Bree Pavely took the loss on the mound, while Taylor Schury managed to get the only hit for the Sonic.
The Sonic rebounded with a 10-3 win Saturday morning. Pavely got the win, pitching four innings and recording eight strikeouts. Mackenzie Smith would pitch one inning in relief.
Saturday night’s game against North Battleford was rained out, forcing the Sonic to face the possibility of three games on Sunday.
Sunday morning the Sonic found themselves in a must-win situation in order to qualify for the playoff round. The Sonic scored four runs in the first inning and again in the fourth inning on their way to a 10-2 win, claiming the second seed in their pool and a birth in the semi-finals. Pavely earned the win on the mound and once again Smith closed out the game in relief.
Anaiah Stechyshyn and Brynn Haubrich led the offense with two hits apiece, while Eden Larson found her way on base with three walks.
The Sonic took on the Prince Albert Aces, the top team from the other pool, in the semi-final. The Sonic used a seven-run fifth inning to propel themselves to an 11-6 win. Smith pitched four innings and recorded seven strikeouts to get the win on the mound. Pavely came on for two innings of relief and recorded six strikeouts. Bailey Fox led the way offensively with two hits and two runs batted in. Serena Kochan added two hits and Pavely hit a solo home run.
The final was a rematch of Friday night’s lop-sided game against the top-ranked Twin City Angels. The Sonic bats came alive in the final and scored four runs in the first inning, four runs in the third, and three in the sixth to claim the title with a 13-1 victory. Smith made the start and give up two hits and one run in four innings. Smith also recorded four strikeouts. Pavely would again come in to close out the game, giving up one hit, no runs and striking out three.
Eden Larson led the way offensively with two hits and four RBIs. Pavely chipped in two hits and her second home run of the day. Lyla Thiessen had two hits and scored three runs. Fox, Stechyshyn, and Smith each added two hits in the win.
The U15 Sonic improved to 6-1 on the season. Next action for the Sonic is June 17 when the head to Macklin for games as part of the Saskatchewan Grand Slam Softball League.
