The Swift Current Broncos lost the special teams battle but were still able to defeat the host Regina Pats 5-2 on Saturday.
Gage Alexander made 40 saves to lead the Broncos to the win. The overage goaltender improved to 4-2-0-0 during his first season with the Broncos.
The Broncos built up a 3-0 lead on goals from Sam McGinley, Josh Filmon, and Connor Hvidston over the opening two periods.
The Broncos spent much of the third period shorthanded and the Pats made them pay with power play goals from Alexander Suzdalev and Stanizlav Svozil. Filmon sealed the win with his 10th goal of the season and Josh Davies scored into an empty net to close the scoring. The Broncos have now won five of their past six games as they improved to 7-8-0-0, while the Pats fell to 7-8-0-1. The two teams will rematch on Friday back in Swift Current.
