An unusually hot start to September has produced a total of 29 new daily maximum temperature records over a pair of hot Saskatchewan days.
A total of 21 records were set on September 3, fresh off the heels of eight new new daily maximum temperature records on September 1.
Environment Canada reported 21 new record temperatures across the province on Saturday, with the community of Leader setting the hottest new record for a September 3 by climbing to 38.5 Celsius to erase the previous mark of 36.9 set in 2009 and ending up as the hottest September 3 since records have been kept in the Leader area dating back to 1924.
Temperatures in the Southwest produced five new records in total. Also setting new records were: Swift Current, which climbed to 36.5 to break the former mark of 36.1 from 1940; Eastend, where the temperature reached 34.8 to erase the former mark of 33.6 from 2009; Cypress Hills Park, which reached 33.4 to break the former mark of 30.3 from 2009; and Maple Creek posted a 37.3 record day to beak the previous 35.2 record from 2009.
Other records were set in: Assiniboia (new 35.4, old 34.1 in 2005); Elbow (new 37.1, old 34.4 in 1978); Key Lake (new 31.0, old 25.5 in 2003); Kindersley (new 36.3, old 35.1 in 2009); La Ronge (new 30.9, old 28.9 in 1938); Lucky Lake (new 37.4, old 35.2 in 2009); Meadow Lake (new 31.6, old 30.6 in 2009); North Battleford (new 35.3, old 33.3 in 1950); Outlook (new 37.6, old 34.5 in 2009); Prince Albert (new 30.9, old 29.7 in 2009); Rosetown (new 36.9, old 35.8 in 2009); Saskatoon (new 35.1, old 32.2 in 1940); Scott (new 34.9, old 33.9 in 1950); Southend (new 30.1, old 27.8 in 2006); Waskesiu Lake (new 27.5, old 26.7 in 2006); Watrous (new 34.3, old 31.5 in 1982).
The Southwest remains under a heat warning for Sunday, with daytime temperatures again reaching the 35 Celsius range, along with overnight lows near 16 Celsius.
Back on September 1, Environment Canada reported that Rockglen recorded the highest new record by reaching a temperature of 35.8 Celsius to break the former mark of 30.9 set in 2016. Maple Creek reached a new high of 33 Celsius, narrowly edging out a 32.9 Celsius day recorded in 1929. Lucky Lake also reached 33 Celsius, breaking their former high of 31.3 from 2009.
Other records were set in: Broadview (new 34.1, old 33.3 in 1940); Last Mountain Lake (new 33.7, old 32.5 in 1983); Regina (new 35.6, old 35 in 1929); Watrous (new 34.6, old 31.5 in 1983), and Wynyard (new 34, old 31.6 in 1991).
