The Swift Current Kabos Broncos opened the Saskatchewan Bantam AA Hockey League playoffs with a win Wednesday.
The Broncos had finished second in the South Division with a 19-4-4 record, while the Estevan Bruins were ninth at 8-19-3. The best-of-three series opener was a one-goal game most of the way, but the host Broncos got two late goals for a 4-1 win.
Reed Jacobson scored twice, while Rhett Evjen and Riley Dekowny also scored for the Broncos. Jacob Herman had a strong outing in goal to earn the win.
Evjen opened the scoring with a power play goal and Jacobson scored before the end of the first period for a 2-1 lead.
The second period was scoreless, as was most of the third period, before Jacobson one-time his second of the game home for an insurance marker with 3:35 left on the clock. Dekowny added a shorthanded goal into an empty net to seal the win.
Keagon Little assisted on the first three goals, while Joe Arntsen also picked up an assist.
Kaiden Tuchscherer replied for the Bruins, while Logan Nagel made 35 saves to keep them in the game.
Game two will be played Saturday in Estevan. Game three, if necessary, will be played on Sunday at 6:15 p.m. at Fairview West Arena.
