Broncos salvage single point in Edmonton

The Swift Current Broncos were only able to earn one point during two games in Edmonton prior to the holiday break.

Friday, the Broncos and host Oil Kings combined for 13 goals, but it was the Oil Kings who emerged victorious with an 8-5 win.

The Oil Kings scored three goals in the first and second periods before the Broncos scored three goals in the final frame.

Raphael Pelletier led the Broncos with two goals, while Rayan Bettahar, Connor Hvidston, and Josh Filmon also scored. Reid Dyck took the loss after allowing five goals on 26 shots over 27:09. Isaac Poulter made 16 saves on 19 shots over the final 32:51.

Carter Souch scored twice for Edmonton during a three-point outing. Josh Williams, Carson Golder, Shea Van Olm, Jaxsen Wiebe, Cole Miller, and Jalen Luypen also scored. Kolby Hay picked up the win with 28 saves.

Saturday, the Broncos salvaged a single point out of the weekend with a 3-2 overtime loss when Luypen scored the game winner with 34 seconds remaining in the extra frame.

Mathew Ward had scored to give the Broncos an early lead before Souch and Chase Friedt-Mohr replied for the Oil Kings. Braeden Lewis scored for the Broncos in the third period to force overtime.

Poulter took the loss with 35 saves on 38 shots. Alex Worthington earned the win in his WHL debut with 32 saves.

The Broncos entered the holiday break with an 11-15-3-1 record.

The Broncos will return to action on Dec. 27 when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The two teams will rematch the following day in Lethbridge.
