Elijah Matthies liked what he saw when he visited the University of Calgary, so much so, he has decided to further his academic and football pursuits at the University of Calgary.

The 17-year-old 6’3”, 270-pound offensive lineman from the Swift Current Comprehensive Colts received interest from numerous U Sports schools such as the Universities of Saskatchewan, Regina, and UBC in Canada West, as well as Queen’s in Kingston, ON., in addition to Dinos.

Matthies was the Colts Rookie of the Year as a Grade 10 student, was a starting member Saskatchewan Selects Team, and is regarded as an outstanding prospect at the post-secondary level.

“I loved the competitive and winning culture that is present with the Dinos. The offensive line group are a great bunch of guys that push each other,” stated Matthies, who has been a high honors student while at Swift Current Composite and plans to enroll in Mechanical Engineering courses in the Schulich School of Engineering.

“I also liked the professionalism present and look forward to working with Coach Carson (offensive line coach Paul Carson),” stated Matthies who also wrestles competitively in the off-season and was coached by Derek Murdoch in football at Swift Current Comprehensive.

The son of Scott and Jenelle Matthies, Elijah also liked the proximity of Calgary to Swift Current. “Calgary is really not that far, only a five-hour drive and this way my parents can come to the games,” he stated.

The Dinos are looking forward to having Matthies join the team. “Elijah is an excellent student. He has good size and excellent skills and we are looking forward to having him join our program in 2022,” states Matt Berry, who serves as Recruiting Coordinator as well as Defensive Coordinator.
