Motorists will be detoured around a portion of Cheadle St. W. this week to allow crews to complete a conversion project from overhead to underground power line.
The downtown road closure began on Sunday, and plans are to have the portion of Cheadle St. W. closed from 1st Ave. N.W. to Central Ave. N. for a period of seven to 10 days to complete the work.
“This is part of an ongoing conversion project that moves our existing overhead power lines underground,” said Mitch Minken, General Manager of the City’s Infrastructure & Operations Division. “The overhead lines are located in the alleys in the downtown business area. However, we need to close the street on the affected block to trench the lines under the roadway, as we have done in previous years with these ongoing upgrades. While closures are a temporary inconvenience for motorists, the result of the work will be a safer, more aesthetic downtown area, and an increase to the lifespan of our power line assets.”
Motorists are reminded to drive with caution in and around construction zones, and to be prepared for additional traffic along North Railway Street during construction.
