57’s will not participate in 2021 WCBL season

There will be no collegiate summer baseball in Swift Current for a second consecutive season.

After the 2020 Western Canadian Baseball League season was wiped out entirely by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swift Current 57’s will not participate in the 2021 season either.

The 11-team WCBL announced on Thursday that the season would proceed with only Canadian players and that five Alberta teams have committed to taking part. The Okotoks Dawgs will field two teams and will be joined by the Edmonton Prospects, Lethbridge Bulls, and expansion Sylvan Lake Gulls. The Fort McMurray Giants and Medicine Hat Mavericks are still considering their participation in the league.

The Swift Current 57’s, along with the Regina Red Sox, Weyburn Beavers, Moose Jaw Miller Express, and Brooks Bombers have all made the decision to postpone a return to the field until 2022.
