Wildcats take single point from Rebels

Jerzey Watteyne STEVEN MAH/SOUTHWEST BOOSTER

The Swift Current Innovation Credit Union Wildcats played two close games against the Regina Rebels in the Saskatchewan Female U18 AAA Hockey League, emerging with a single point from the weekend.

Saturday, the Wildcats lost 2-1 on the road. Jerzey Watteyne scored the opening goal before Kaylee Dyer and Greta Henderson scored in the second period for the Rebels.

Amaya Giraudier took the loss with 28 saves on 30 shots. Payton Schlamp made 24 saves for the Rebels.

Sunday, the Wildcats tied the game twice before losing 3-2 when Henderson scored in the second overtime for the Rebels.

Paris Appel and Ava Metzger scored for the Wildcats. Samantha Thompson assisted on both goals, while Jessica Boufard and Sadie Keller also picked up assists.

“I thought we battled right till the end,” said Thompson. “We had chances, we just didn’t put them in the net. Next time we’re going to get them I think.”

Giraudier took the loss with 34 saves on 37 shots. Schlamp made 32 saves for the Rebels.

“I think we played as a team. We played pretty much 60 minutes, so I think that if we keep working hard in practice we’ll beat them in the end. We just have to keep working as a team and moving pucks,” added Thompson.

“I’d say we just have to do the little things better, like moving our feet the extra mile. Little things like that will make us a better team,” she added.

The Wildcats (1-1-0-1) will face the Notre Dame Hounds (2-0-0-0) this weekend, beginning Saturday at the Innovation Credit Union iplex at 3:45 p.m. The two teams will rematch on Sunday in Wilcox. They met twice in the preseason with the Wildcats winning 3-2 in Wilcox and the Hounds winning 5-4 in Swift Current.

“Definitely moving pucks to the middle and skating I think. They’re going to be dirty, so we’ve got to keep our heads up,” said Thompson.
