Scott Joseph had a record setting performance at the Canada West Track and Field Championship in Saskatoon.

The Swift Current product soared 7.67 metres in long jump on Friday to set a school and Saskatchewan record. The University of Regina Cougars rookie’s record moved him past his own coach Wade Huber, who had jumped 7.53 metres in 2006.

The host Saskatchewan Huskies’ Michael Akintunde was second at 7.38 metres.

Joseph added a third-place finish in Triple Jump on Saturday when he travelled 14.56 metres.

Manitoba’s Oyinkansol Akinola won gold with a 14.73-metre effort, followed by Calgary’s Sodienye Nkwonta at 14.59 metres.

Joseph has made considerable gains in both events since his time in Swift Current. He won gold at the Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current in long jump at 6.85 metres and triple jump at 13.88 metres in August of 2019.

He was named the Canada West Male Rookie of the Year at the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.

Leader’s Jackson Sitter, a rookie with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, placed 12th in the triple jump with 12.59-metre top jump.

The U Sports Track and Field Championship will be held on March 5-7 in Edmonton.
