Sports fans will have the opportunity to experience a big piece of the rich history of Saskatchewan sports during the Western Canada Summer Games.
The Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame’s mobile exhibit trailer will be at the Firelight Festival at Kinetic Exhibition Park on Saturday, August 10 and Monday, August 12 from 5 p.m. until close.
The 53-foot mobile exhibit trailer was created to help bring the province’s sports history to the public. Launched in 2016, it racked up 10,304 kilometres in its first 58 days on the road. Now, the trailer primarily supports the SSHF’s Never Give Up education program where inductees educate and inspire elementary school students with their stories.
This year, inductee Ted Jaleta – who was shot, jailed and tortured during the during the Ethiopian Civil War in 1976 before escaping and settling in Canada – has been sharing his story at schools in the province.
Since 2011 Never Give Up has reached more than 18,000 students.
The trailer honours approximately 250 of the Hall of Fame’s 519 inductees. In additions to photographs and biographies of the athletes, there are numerous artifacts including jerseys dating back to the early 20th century and even an Olympic gold medal from 1928.
