Six Swift Current volleyball players were in Halifax this week to represent Saskatchewan at the Canada Cup with their respective provincial teams.
Parker Bloom and Clay Thierman were on the Saskatchewan Youth Green Team in Division 1. They had a 3-1 record in the round robin despite losing their opener to Quebec 1 in straight sets (17-25, 22-25, 26-28). They rebounded with wins over Saskatchewan Youth White in four sets (25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-19), Ontario Red 1 in five sets (16-25, 26-24, 18-25, 25-19, 15-8), and Atlantic (25-8, 22-25, 25-16, 25-13) to conclude the round robin.
They dropped the Tier 1 quarter-final in two games to the BC Selects (17-25, 19-25) on Sunday morning.
The Saskatchewan Youth Green team rebounded on Saturday afternoon with a three-set win over BC Red (25-12, 19-25, 15-12).
They were knocked out of the tournament in a loss to Ontario Red 1 (18-25, 27-25) on Sunday morning.
Shaye Wall suited up for the Sask Selects Green as they finished with a 4-4 record to place second in Tier 2. They dropped both matches in the opening pool. They fell in five sets to Nova Scotia (28-26, 24-26, 25-27, 25-15, 9-15) and then lost 3-1 to BC Blue (25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 21-25).
The Sask Selects Green also had a 1-2 record in their power pool, beginning with a five-set loss to Quebec 2 (13-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 14-16). They also lost in four sets to Alberta Black (25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 19-25), before rebounding to defeat PEI in straight sets (25-15, 25-12, 25-16).
The Sask Selects Green opened the playoffs with a sweep of Nova Scotia (25-20, 25-10) in the Tier 2 quarter-final on Saturday afternoon.
They took on the Manitoba Selects in the Tier 2 semi-final on Sunday morning and kept their tournament alive with a sweep (25-23, 25-13).
They faced Quebec 2 for the Tier 2 championship and lost in straight sets on Sunday morning.
Avery Tonnies and Abby Sauder were on the court with the Sask Selects Green in the Women’s Division 2. They finished with a 2-1 record in the round robin beginning with straight sets victories over the Manitoba Selects (26-24, 25-18, 25-19) and Newfoundland (25-23, 25-19, 26-24), before losing to Alberta Blue (26-28, 25-23, 18-25, 12-25).
They added a 2-1 record in the playoffs to conclude the tournament, beginning with a sweep of Prince Edward Island (25-18, 25-16, 25-20). They dropped the Tier 1 quarter-final to Alberta Blue (18-25, 12-25) and then wrapped up the day with a win over Manitoba Youth (23-25, 26-24, 18-16).
They wrapped up the tournament on Sunday morning with a loss to Alberta Black (12-25, 17-25).
Tonnies and Sauder will represent Saskatchewan at the Western Canada Summer Games, while Wall will suit up for the men’s team.
Mackenzie McIntyre played for the Sask Selects White in Division 2 as they finished with a 4-3 record overall. They won once and lost twice in the round robin, beginning with a five-set win over the Northwest Territories (19-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 15-6). They dropped their second match to Nova Scotia (22-25, 25-23, 13-25, 17-25) and then were swept by Manitoba Youth (12-25, 23-25, 20-25).
The Sask Selects White were swept to open the Tier 1 Round of 16 by Ontario Red (10-25, 10-25, 22-25).
They bounced back on Saturday with wins over New Brunswick (25-23, 27-25) and the Northwest Territories (18-25, 25-18, 15-8).
Sunday, the Sask Selects White swept the Manitoba Selects (25-23, 25-13) to conclude their Canada Cup.
