Whew…. What an exciting weekend of volleyball for our SWAC teams. We had eight of our senior teams competing either at regional or provincial volleyball tournaments!!
PROVINCIAL VOLLEYBALL
Fox Valley 1A girls hosted the provincial championship. They finished pool play with a record of 2-2 (with wins over Borden and Arcola, but losses to Chief Paskwa and Englefeld). Having two wins was good enough to nail down second place in the pool. They defeated Ecole Mathieu in the quarter final, but lost to Rose Valley in the semifinal. That put the hometown Legends in the Bronze medal match against Vonda. The match was one of the most exciting games of the weekend; the gym was full of exuberant fans for both teams. The Legends came through with a thrilling win (26-24 and 25-23). Fox Valley claimed the bronze medal. Congratulations to Fox Valley, second Bronze medal in a row!!

The Swift Current Comp. Colts were perfect in pool play at 5A Boys Provincials in Prince Albert. They had wins over Regina LeBoldus, Meadow Lake Carpenter, Saskatoon Centennial and Lloydminster. They defeated Yorkton in the quarter final and then gave us all a bit of a scare needing three sets to defeat Carpenter in the semifinal. The Colts then came up against Balgonie in the final. This time, Balgonie was too much for the Colts and Swift Current came home with the silver.
What a great season the Colts have had this year!! They have won bronze, gold and silver in the past three years at provincial competition.
The SCCHS Ardens were at the 5A Girl’s Provincials in Saskatoon. The had wins over Winston Knoll and Prince Albert St. Mary in pool play, but lost to Bishop Mahoney and Weyburn. In the playoff cross over, the Ardens played a tough PA Carlton team in the quarter final. The Ardens strong season came to an end with a 2-0 loss.
BOYS REGIONAL VOLLEYBALL
Three of our SWAC boys 1A volleyball teams were in Frontier for the regional competition. Fox Valley finished first in their pool with a perfect 2-0 record. Frontier finished second in that pool. Vanguard was in the other pool and finished second after pool play. In the semifinals, Fox Valley needed 3 sets to get by Vanguard and move into the championship final. Frontier lost to Rouleau in the other semifinal and dropped into the third place game against Vanguard. In the final, Fox Valley lost to Rouleau, but has still qualified for 1A boys provincials in Middle Lake. The final berth to provincials came down to a battle between Frontier and Vanguard. In the end, the hometown fans carried the Frontier Raiders to the win and a spot at provincials.
Leader (2A boys) was at the Regional in Gravelbourg. With one loss to Montmartre and wins over Kakisiwew and Radville, the Saints advanced to the semifinal against Wawota. They lost that match, so had one last chance to qualify in the 3rd place game against Regina Laval. The Saints came up with the big win and are off to provincials in Kinistino.
3A Shaunavon Shadows qualified for the regional tournament in Outlook (LCBI). A win against Eston, followed by a tough 2-1 loss to Waldheim left the Shadows in second place in their pool. They lost the semifinal to Hepburn and then went to the 3rd place game. It was a nail biter of a match, but the Shadows lost in a tough third set (17-15).
BASKETBALL OFFICIALS CLINIC
SWAC will be holding a Basketball Official’s Clinic on Wednesday, November 28. The clinic starts at 6:30 and takes place in the lecture theater at Swift Current Comp. We are actively trying to increase the number of basketball officials we have in SWAC. If you are interested in more details, about how to become a basketball official, contact Valerie Gordon or Tyson Krause (MCCHS).
Our SWAC winter activities (basketball, wrestling, curling) have officially begun. The schedules for the SWAC junior and senior basketball leagues will be sent out next week.
