Just hours after completing a seven-player trade to add scoring depth, the Swift Current Broncos came up with a very good performance but lost 3-2 in overtime to the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings.
The Broncos opened the scoring early when Tyler Steenbergen scored on the power play, his WHL leading 32nd of the season.
Baron Thompson and Caiden Daley replied for the Wheat Kings only 2:04 apart as the Wheat Kings took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
The Broncos fired another 17 shots on goal in the second period but neither team was able to score.
Aleksi Heponiemi finally scored on the power play after a flurry of chances early in the third period when he one-timed home a cross-ice pass.
The Broncos had plenty more scoring chances but were unable to beat Logan Thompson again as he finished with 46 saves.
Ty Lewis scored with a perfect shot on the rush 2:49 into the three-on-three overtime period to end the game.
“Overall it was a pretty good game,” said rookie defenseman Noah King. “We’re are not unhappy with that game, but you can’t be really happy with a loss.”
“I was certainly very happy,” said head coach Manny Viveiros of the team’s effort. “The kids played well. We stuck to our systems. We had a lots of shots on net and some really good chances. Their goaltending was very good tonight. It was one of those nights where we very easily could have got two points out of this.”
Logan Flodell dropped 15–4-2-0 with 24 saves on 27 shots, while Thompson improved to 13-6-0-1.
The Broncos remain second in the East Division at 17-5-2-0, three points back of Moose Jaw. Brandon improved to 15-7-0-1 and trail the Broncos by five points in the standings.
The Broncos are back at home Wednesday to host the Victoria Royals.
