Swift Current Minor Baseball players, parents, coaches, and officials gathered Monday to celebrate another successful season.
The Annual General Meeting and Awards Night capped the 2017 season, which was filled with team and individual achievements.
Amongst the award winners were Glenn Switzer as the recipient of the Louis Cherpin Volunteer of the Year and Pat Rokochy, who took home the Sharon Hogg Community Service Award.
Bantam 57’s pitcher/third baseman Brody Alexandre won the Sharon Hogg Outstanding Player Award.
“It feels great,” said Alexandre after collecting two awards. “I have put in a lot of hard work this season and it all paid off.”
Alexandre, 14, helped lead the Bantam 57’s to a Regina AAA League championship before they just a missed a trip to Western Canadians at Provincials.
“It was really fun. We worked really hard. Being able to win league was awesome. Coming up short at provincials was a little heart-breaking, but overall it was a great season.”
He was still able to attend Westerns as a member of the Saskatoon A’s before concluding his season with a trip to 15U Nationals, where Team Saskatchewan won bronze.
“It was a great experience. I was honoured to make the team. Coming up just short against Quebec [in the semi-finals] was a little heart-breaking, but being able to win bronze was awesome.”
“It was definitely a success when you have a night like tonight and you have lots of positive things to talk about,” said current SCMB President Kevin Patenaude. “Baseball in Swift Current is pretty big. We are seeing kids play at such a high level. We are seeing the role models in the Joe Carnahans showing these kids that they can aim for the stars. We have great players, lots of great players coming up, great coaches, great umpires, great community, great facilities, couldn’t be any better.”
