Four days earlier, the Swift Current 57’s found out the hard way that one bad inning can cost a team a ballgame when they allowed 12 runs in a sixth inning of a 14-8 loss to the visiting Moose Jaw Miller Express. Wednesday, the 57’s authored their own eight-run sixth inning on their way to a 14-7 win over the visiting Brooks Bombers.
The 57’s entered their half of the sixth inning trailing 7-3 before combining five singles with one walk and a three-run home from Blake Adams to take control of the game.
The 57’s finished the game with 15 hits, including three home runs.
Adams and Nick Canas both finished with three hits, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Keil Krumwiede also had three hits, including a two-run home run, and two runs scored. Cole Thibodeau finished with two hits, one run scored, and two RBI to improve his average to .404 on the season.
Leadoff man Riley Campbell opened the scoring for the 57’s with a solo home run that was followed by a lightning quick trip around the bases. He also stole his league leading 28th base of the season.
The 57’s got four scoreless relief innings from the combination of Will Blanchard, Fernando Pena, and Krumwiede to lock down the win. Blanchard was credited with the win after a scoreless sixth inning to lower his earned run average to 2.25.
The 57’s improved to 26-12 with their third straight win, while Brooks dropped to 14-26 with their third straight loss.
The 57’s will conclude a five-game home stand Friday against the Regina Red Sox. The 57’s and Red Sox are currently tied atop the Eastern Division standings with identical 26-12 records. The 57’s won the only head-to-head meeting, but will play five of their final 10 games against the Red Sox.
