Southwest athletes were in fine form over the weekend when they totaled 13 medals at the SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championships in Saskatoon. A total of 97 athletes represented the South West Athletic Conference and students from six different schools were able to bring home medals.
Swift Current’s Scott Joseph led the way with two medals for the Colts. He won gold in Midget Boys Long Jump with a 6.31-metre jump, only four centimetres off the provincial record. He added a silver medal in the 100 Metre Dash in 11.67 seconds, just behind Dalmeny’s Jayce Janzen.
Swift Current’s Kalea Sauder also brought home two medals from Provincials. She was second in the Junior Girls 100 Metres in 12.83 seconds behind Evan Hardy’s Ann Ogunubi. She also won bronze in the Long Jump with a 5.07-metre top jump. Sauder finished second in the Junior Girls Division aggregate standings with 54 points, behind only Lumsden’s Kaitlyn Harrison’s 68 points.
Swift Current’s Brielle Wall won two medals in Saskatoon. She placed third in Midget Girls Long Jump after sailing 5.15 metres. She also cleared the bar at 1.53 metres to win bronze in the High Jump.
The Southwest finished with four gold medals in total during the two-day event that was interrupted by hail on Friday.
Swift Current’s Braedon Friesen won gold in the Senior Boys High Jump when he cleared the bar at 1.92 metres.
Shaunavon’s Austin Smith added a gold medal in the Midget Boys Javelin when his best effort travelled 46.37 metres. Fox Valley’s Joseph Bosch was just behind him at 46.05 metres to win silver.
Consul’s Madison Howell also won gold in the Midget Girls Discus with a 31.00-metre effort. Macey Howell made it two medals for the twin sisters when she won bronze with a 27.70-metre throw.
Cabri’s Liam Bissonnette picked up a silver medal in the Boys Wheelchair 100 Metres.
Also winning silver was Shaunavon’s Nixen Voll in the Senior Boys Quadrathlon. Voll won the 100 Metre Dash in 12.03 seconds and topped the Long Jump with a 5.95-metre jump. He placed second in the Shot Put at 11.61 metres and then finished 22nd in the 800 Metres in 2:28.57.
Adding the final medal was Leader’s Jackson Sitter with a bronze in Midget Boys Triple Jump in 11.43 metres.

The South West finished in ninth out of 14 districts with 775.5 points. Saskatoon won the district title easily with 1,926 points, over 600 points ahead of Horizon Central, who earned the most points per 1,000 students.
Shaunavon finished second among 2A schools with 136 points, while the Swift Current Comp. was second amongst 4A schools with 345 points.
