Athletes from across the Southwest converged in Swift Current Wednesday and battled their way through windy conditions at the SHSAA District track and field meet. The athletes in the Midget, Junior, and Senior divisions were chasing top-two finishes in each event to qualify for provincials.
Swift Current Comp. Ardens sophomore Kalea Sauder led the meet with two record-breaking efforts and won four events in Junior Girls as she finished as the only competitor with 40 points to lead the aggregate standings. Sauder set her first record in the 80 Metre Hurdles in 12.05 seconds to erase the previous mark of 12.62 seconds. She added a second record in the 100 Metre Dash in 12.80 seconds to trim the record down from 12.90 seconds.
There were a total of seven records broken by athletes from five different schools. Maple Creek’s Michael Mudingayi also broke the 100 Metre Dash record in Junior Boys in 11.42 seconds, just edging the previous mark of 11.46 seconds.
Swift Current’s Scott Joseph added a record for the Colts in the Midget Boys Triple Jump with a 12.39-metre effort to better the former mark of 12.15 metres.
Hodgeville’s Tilynn Peterson added over half a metre to the Midget Girls Shot Put mark of 9.87 metres when her best effort travelled 10.48 metres.
Shaunavon’s Bryden Tremere set a Bantam Boys Triple Jump record of 9.30 metres to erase the previous mark of 8.88 metres.
Frontier’s Myra Halderman set the final record in Bantam Girls Shot Put with a 9.19-metres toss to sail past the previous record of 9.03 metres.
Swift Current athletes won five of the six aggregate titles they competed in on their home track. Ashley MacDonald topped Midget Girls with 38 points, while Joseph totaled 38 points to top Midget Boys. Mikayla Swallow tied for top spot in Senior Girls with Shaunavon’s Kortlyn Fuller with 38 points apiece, while Logan Fritzke won Senior Boys with 30 points. Shaunavon’s Ryker Larson earned 34 points to lead all Junior Boys at the meet.

Halderman topped Bantam Girls with 30 points, while O.M. Irwin’s Rhett Vavra won the Bantam Boys Division with 36 points.
The SHSAA Provincial Track and Field Championships will be held June 2-3 in Saskatoon.
