Murdoch and Kilshaw win WCBL crown

A pair of Swift Current Minor Baseball products helped the Saskatoon Berries win the Western Canadian Baseball League championship this season.

Ethan Murdoch and Aiden Kilshaw were key contributors as the Berries swept the Sylvan Lake Gulls in the championship series. They closed out the best-of-three series with an 11-1 win at home on Sunday.

Kilshaw hit a home run in the seventh inning as he finished with two hits, three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Murdoch singled, walked twice, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run.

The Berries had won game one 4-1 on Saturday in Sylvan Lake. Murdoch had a single, a home run, and scored twice while playing in right field and hitting second. Kilshaw started at catcher, had a single, a walk, and drove in two runs while batting fifth.

The Berries, coached by former Swift Current 57’s bench boss Joe Carnahan, lost only once in seven games in the post-season. They had finished second in the East Division with a 38-18 record behind the Moose Jaw Miller Express, who they beat in the second round of the playoffs.

Murdoch was amongst the top players in the WCBL this season with 14 home runs and a .358 average over 55 games. He added 62 runs batted in, 68 runs scored, and 36 walks.

Kilshaw, a member of the Junior National Team, hit .308 with 10 runs scored and 14 RBI’s over 16 regular season games. He is headed to Texas next season to play for the Blinn College Buccaneers.
