
The Lake Diefenbaker Slough Sharks made a spirited third-period comeback, but lost 4-3 in a shootout to the visiting Wheat City Walleye on Friday.
The Slough Sharks came out flying and were rewarded with a Anthony Wilson goal 8:16 into regulation on a three-on-two rush. The lead was short-lived as the Walleye responded with a Brady Turko goal on his second rebound opportunity for a 1-1 tie after one period.
The Walleye took their first lead 1:35 into the second period with a Nicholas Johnson goal on an odd-man rush.
They added to the lead 13:02 into the third period with a Jaxon Jacobson goal. Hyde Davidson replied 1:09 later to cut into the lead with his fourth goal of the season. The Slough Sharks pulled their goaltender and scored with 32 seconds remaining when Trae Johnson converted from in tight to send the game to overtime.
Brady Turko scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the Walleye to the win.
The Slough Sharks fell to 13-41–4-4, while the Walleye improved to 36-24-1-0.
Archer Cooke made 34 saves on 37 shots to improve to 3-10-3-3 for the Slough Sharks. Filip Ruzicka made 35 saves to improve to 23-12-0-0.
The Slough Sharks will return the visit to Brandon to face the Walleye on Saturday.
Bronco Bits: The Walleye’s Gunnar Gleasman was suspended one game for the instigating a fight with Trae Wilke after the final shot of the shootout. The Walleye were also fined $500 for the game misconduct.
